Bitaxe Gamma

1.2 TH/s ~18 W Whisper Easy setup

Who it's for: Almost every beginner. It's small, cheap to run, open source, and it's the model that won a whole block in July 2026.

Mining powerAbout 1.2 TH/s - our 1x reference point. One real mining chip (the same BM1370 family used in big industrial machines).
Power useAround 15-21 W - roughly a bright LED desk lamp.
Noise A small fan with a soft whir; noticeable in a quiet bedroom at night. (No official dB rating.) unverified
HeatWarm to the touch, won't heat a room.
Setup Easy: plug in, join its Wi-Fi hotspot, enter your Wi-Fi, a pool address and your Bitcoin address in the web page (AxeOS).

Pros

  • Cheapest real ASIC miner to run (a few dollars a month)
  • Fully open-source hardware and firmware, huge community
  • Tiny - sits next to your router
  • Sold by Australian stores with local support

Cons

  • Solo odds are still about 1 in 16,800 a year
  • Pooled earnings are a few cents a day
  • Check the power supply has an Australian plug
Our verdict: Start here. The most fun per dollar and the gentlest introduction to running your own miner.

The open-source all-rounder

NerdQaxe++

4.8 TH/s ~80 W Quiet Easy setup

Who it's for: Hobbyists who want 'real' hashrate on a desk while staying open source.

Mining powerAbout 4.8 TH/s with four chips - roughly 4x a Bitaxe Gamma.
Power useAbout 80 W - like an old incandescent light globe.
Noise Large fan; a gentle hum, louder when tuned up. (No official dB rating.) unverified
HeatA gentle warm breeze; handy in a Melbourne winter.
Setup Easy: AxeOS-style web setup. Needs a 12 V power supply.

Pros

  • Lots of hashrate for the size
  • Open-source design and firmware
  • Stocked by Australian stores

Cons

  • About $198 a year in power at Victorian default rates
  • Several revisions with different specs - check the listing
  • Pricier than a Bitaxe
Our verdict: The sweet spot if you want more than a toy but don't want a fan-heater in the lounge.

Canaan Avalon Nano 3S
Canaan Avalon Nano 3S
The quiet heater

Canaan Avalon Nano 3S

6.0 TH/s ~140 W Quiet Easy setup

Who it's for: People who want a polished, app-controlled box that doubles as a small heater.

Mining powerAbout 6 TH/s on High (4.5 TH/s Medium, 3 TH/s Low) - roughly 5x a Bitaxe Gamma.
Power useUp to 140 W (about 70 W on Low) - a small fan heater on its lowest setting.
Noise Canaan rates it 33-40 dB - about a quiet library.
HeatExhaust air around 60-70 °C; genuinely warms a small room.
Setup Easy: Avalon Family phone app, three power modes, set your pool and address.

Pros

  • Quiet and nicely made, from a major manufacturer
  • Heat you'd otherwise pay for in winter
  • Simple app with low/medium/high modes

Cons

  • About $346 a year in power at full speed on Victorian default rates
  • Closed-source firmware
  • Heat is a downside in a Queensland summer
Our verdict: Our pick for a quiet, good-looking miner that earns its keep as a winter heater.

Bitaxe Gamma Duo & GT 801

2.2 TH/s ~43 W Quiet Easy setup

Who it's for: Bitaxe owners who want more hashrate without moving up to a noisy box.

Mining powerTwo chips: about 1.6 TH/s (Duo) or 2.15 TH/s (GT) - roughly 1.4-1.8x a Gamma.
Power useAbout 26 W (Duo) to 43 W (GT) - a laptop charger working hard.
Noise Bigger heatsink and fan; a steady hum. (No official dB rating.) unverified
HeatNoticeably warm air out the back.
Setup Easy: same AxeOS web setup as the Gamma. The GT runs on a 12 V supply (marked on the board).

Pros

  • More hashrate in the same open-source ecosystem
  • Same easy setup as a Gamma
  • Still cheap to run

Cons

  • Costs more up front for a still-tiny chance
  • Louder than a single-chip Gamma
  • Fewer Australian stores stock them
Our verdict: A good second miner, or a first one if you know you'll want more. Doubling hashrate doubles your (tiny) odds.

The budget alternative

Lucky Miner LV06 / LV07 / LV08

4.5 TH/s ~120 W Quiet Easy setup

Who it's for: Bargain hunters comfortable with less community support.

Mining powerCommonly quoted: ~0.5 TH/s (LV06), ~1 TH/s (LV07), ~4.5 TH/s (LV08). Not independently verified.
Power useCommonly quoted: ~13 W, ~30 W and ~120 W respectively. Not verified.
Noise Varies by model; LV08 is a boxed unit with fans. (No verified rating.)
HeatSimilar to other miners of the same wattage.
Setup Easy: web setup similar to a Bitaxe.

Pros

  • Often cheap and easy to find
  • Bitaxe-style setup
  • LV08 offers a lot of hashrate for the price

Cons

  • Specs are manufacturer claims we couldn't verify
  • Closed or less-supported firmware vs genuine open-source designs
  • Smaller support community
Our verdict: Fine if the price is right, but a genuine Bitaxe or NerdQaxe is the safer beginner choice.

Canaan Avalon Q
Canaan Avalon Q
The serious home rig

Canaan Avalon Q

90 TH/s ~1,674 W Loud Moderate setup

Who it's for: Committed miners with cheap power (big solar, off-peak) who want real hashrate at home.

Mining powerUp to 90 TH/s - about 75x a Bitaxe Gamma, from 160 chips.
Power use800 W (Eco), 1,300 W (Standard) or up to 1,674 W rated - a full-blown heater.
Noise Canaan rates it 45-65 dB - quiet-office to loud-conversation. Not bedroom-friendly at full speed.
HeatWill heat a room. Plan where the hot air goes.
Setup Moderate: app or LAN setup, but you need to think about the circuit, ventilation and noise. Weighs ~10.5 kg, the size of a PC tower.

Pros

  • Real hashrate: about 1 in 225 chance of a solo block per year
  • Eco mode lets you trade speed for power and noise
  • Works on a standard Australian 10 A power point (don't use a power board)

Cons

  • About $4,135 a year in power at full speed on Victorian default rates
  • Loud and hot
  • Large up-front cost
Our verdict: Only if you have cheap power and a spare room. Run the calculator first.

NerdMiner
NerdMiner
The desk toy

NerdMiner

Silent Moderate setup

Who it's for: Curious tinkerers and kids who want to see what mining looks like, for the price of a coffee-and-cake.

Mining powerTens to a few hundred kH/s - millions of times slower than a Bitaxe. It runs on an ordinary ESP32 microcontroller, not a mining chip. unverified
Power useAbout what a phone charger idles at (USB powered; exact wattage not verified). unverified
Noise Silent - no fan.
HeatBarely warm.
Setup Moderate: you buy a LILYGO T-Display S3 board, flash free firmware from a web page, add a 3D-printed case.

Pros

  • Cheapest, silent and fun to watch
  • Great way to learn what a hash and a share are
  • Free, open-source firmware

Cons

  • Effectively zero chance of ever finding a block
  • Not an ASIC, so not 'real' mining power
  • You often assemble it yourself
Our verdict: A learning gadget, not a miner. Buy one for the shelf, not for the sats.
Not price-tracked: usually a DIY build on an ESP32 board such as the LILYGO T-Display S3

Sources: [1] [2] · Not independently verified: power draw; newer-firmware hashrate (community benchmark).

Stores we left out, and why
8 stores looked at and not listed
  • MinerHub (minerhub.com.au): Search results show a Perth store, but every visit on 2 Nov 2026 returned a parked-domain "lander" page. Not linked until it's reachable.
  • Mining Store Australia (miningstore.com.au): Real AU store, but it sells large industrial ASICs (Avalon 1366, A1166 Pro), not home miners.
  • Bitmain shop (shop.bitmain.com): Sells only full-size industrial Antminers, not small home miners.
  • Compass Mining: A hosting and industrial-hardware marketplace, not a home-miner retailer.
  • Minerset: Procurement and logistics service for industrial miners, not a home-miner shop (and it blocked our checker).
  • solobitaxe.com: Shenzhen/HK seller offering free worldwide shipping, but we found no independent reviews or Reddit history, and its logo file is a ChatGPT-generated image. Not linked until it has a track record.
  • Daxdi Australia: Shows up in search as a generic dropship marketplace, not a specialist store. Our checker could not reach it to verify, so it is not linked.
  • bitcoinmerch.net: A separate apparel site that ships only within the US. Don't confuse it with bitcoinmerch.com, which is listed.

Store details checked 2026-11-02. "Ships to AU" links to the page where the store says so. Reputation notes summarise public Reddit and forum threads; they're a starting point, not a verdict. We have no relationship with any store listed. Spotted a store we've missed? Tell us.

Jargon buster

The words you'll keep seeing

Hashrate (TH/s)
How many guesses your miner makes per second. 1 TH/s is a trillion guesses a second. More hashrate means more lottery tickets.
Watts (W)
How much electricity it draws. Multiply by hours and your tariff to get the bill: 100 W all year is about 876 kWh.
Efficiency (J/TH)
Joules per terahash: energy used per unit of work. Lower is better. Modern small miners are roughly 15–25 J/TH.
ASIC
Application-Specific Integrated Circuit: a chip built only to mine Bitcoin. Bitaxe, NerdQaxe and Avalon all use ASICs; a NerdMiner does not.
Solo mining
Trying to find a whole block yourself. Winner takes all, but for a small miner it's a long shot.
Pool mining
Sharing work with many miners and splitting rewards in proportion. Small, steady payments.
Block reward
What the winner gets: new bitcoin (the subsidy) plus transaction fees. About 3.140 BTC lately.
Difficulty
How hard the puzzle is. It adjusts every two weeks so blocks keep coming every ~10 minutes, whatever the total hashrate.
Before you buy

Six questions to ask yourself

Getting started

Bought a miner? Here's what comes next

Mine, then secure, then verify. Each step stands on its own, so go at your own pace.

  1. Step 1Mine You are herePick a small home miner and start earning (or chasing) sats.
  2. Step 2Secure your satsSend what you mine to a hardware wallet that only you control.
  3. Step 3Run your own nodeVerify your own bitcoin, protect your privacy, and build your own block templates.

How we choose

We favour miners that are easy to buy in Australia, efficient, and friendly for a first-timer. Specs come from manufacturer or project pages; anything we couldn't verify is marked. Prices are fetched automatically from store feeds and never guessed.
